With heavy anticipation, Jonah was very excited to start the tournament. His first round game was against Turko Arsenijs (rated 1850) from Latvia.
Latvia is a country in Northern Europe in the Baltic region. It is bordered to the north by Estonia, to the south by Lithuania and to the east both by Belarus and
the Russian Federation.
the Russian Federation.
After 2.5 hours of gruelling chess, Jonah won in the King and Pawn endgame. After winning, Jonah was grinning from ear to ear! He was very happy and elated to have won the first game!

Hey Jonah,
That is a great start. Enjoy every minute and every game. 2 weeks will fly by, and before you know it you will be back in rainy Vancouver.
Glen really enjoyed reading the updates. Looking forward for some more breaking news updates
Best,
Gyan and Janak
Hi Glen,
Congratulations to Jonah for his start!
Where did you get the info about the Latvian player being rated 1850? In the official tournament papers he has no rating...
All the best,
Eugen and the gang
Replayed the game online and I do not understand why Turko resigned? At the end of the game if Black continues with:
55... Kf5 56.Kd4 Kxf4 it looks like Black is winning since White would not be able to hold the opposition against the double pawns...
